Gremlins rolling into rivalry

KC visits Moniteau for backyard battle

CHERRY TWP — To say Karns City has been rolling would be an understatement.

Since their Week Zero loss to Armstrong, the Gremlins (7-1) have scored more than 30 points in every game.

They have allowed just 38 total points since surrendering 35 in that opener.

They have outscored their last seven opponents by an average margin of 39 points.

Now Karns City's football team travels next door to take on rival Moniteau (3-4) at 7 p.m. Friday.

“Moniteau always gives us one of their best games,” KC coach Ed Conto said. “They always seem to bring it.

“They have a young team this year and I'm hoping we can play a lot of kids and get some of our younger guys more experience. At the same time, we can't let them hang around and beat us. I've seen that happen before. We have to stay focused.”

While the Gremlins are coming off a 31-7 win over previously unbeaten Clarion, the Warriors are coming off a 45-7 drubbing at Clarion-Limestone.

“Just a lack of execution,” Moniteau coach Wade Vogan said. “We were hit with some adversity and we gave up.

“We can't have that. We need to give 48 minutes of solid effort. That's what it takes. If we have anybody having any trouble getting up for Karns City, we've got a problem.”

The Gremlins lead the all-time series 42-21-3 and have dominated the Warriors in recent match-ups. Moniteau defeated KC twice in 2011, 26-24 and 26-12, in the District 9 playoffs.

Since then, KC has reeled off wins over Moniteau by scores of 20-7, 49-12, 48-6, 43-6 and 41-0.

Karns City will be playing Friday without linebacker and leading tackler Brayden Fedorek, out for the rest of the year with a torn ACL suffered two weeks ago.

“That's a big loss for us,” Conto said. “He was the leader of our defense.”

Without Fedorek, KC has Sebastian Troutman and Clay Garing playing strong-side linebacker and Aaron Hutchison moving from the secondary to linebacker.

“He's played linebacker before, he's just a bit rusty there right now,” Conto said. “Aaron will help fill the void there.”

Offensively, the Gremlins have no holes.

Jake King has thrown for 883 yards and nine touchdowns. Chandler Turner has rushed for 908 yards and 12 touchdowns, Kaiden Powers 431 yards and six TDs. Turner and Powers are averaging nearly 15 yards per carry as a tandem.

Eric Dodd and Jimmy Thompson have combined for 25 catches and 332 yards, Turner and Powers 20 catches for 411 yards. Powers is perfect on six field goal attempts.

“Karns City is the epitome of football in District 9,” Vogan said. “We're trying to emulate them. We want our program to be like them.

“Physically, they are much stronger than us. They've been in the weight room a lot more than us.”

The Warriors are led by sophomore quarterback Chance Nagy, who has 697 yards and six touchdowns passing, 308 yards and five TDs rushing. He has thrown 10 interceptions.

“That kid is a true leader for them,” Conto said.

Nick Martino has 258 yards and two TDs rushing for Moniteau. Corey Goyak has 194 on the ground and Dalton Anderson is the leading receiver with 22 catches for 448 yards.

“We've been able to run the ball well at times. It's just been inconsistent,” Vogan said.

Tyler Kerr leads Moniteau defensively with 60 tackles, including 45 solos. James Parenti has 47 and Nagy three interceptions.

Moniteau has a solid kicker in its own right as Steve Fawcett has delivered on five of six field goal attempts.

“We're pretty healthy right now,” Vogan said. “Hopefully, we'll have 32 kids dressed Friday ready to rock.”
