Firefighters respond after child lights carpet on fire

A child playing with a cigarette lighter caused a momentary scare Wednesday night when he set a piece of carpet on fire at his family’s home in Butler, authorities said.

There were no working smoke detectors in the three-story house on Standard Avenue but a family member shortly before 10 p.m. found the fire and quickly stomped it out.

No one was injured and the only damage was a small portion of carpeting that was burned, according to the Butler Fire Department.

The names of the occupants and owner were not immediately available this morning.

The boy was alone in his bedroom when he accidentally set the fire, the department said. One of the boy’s parents apparently heard the clicking of the lighter and went into the room to check.

By then, a neighbor had called 911 to report fire and smoke in the house.

The fire was out by the time crews got there. Firefighters cut out and removed a six-inch square piece of the carpet, which was disposed of, officials said.

Crews were there only about 10 minutes.

The call, the fire department urged, should again remind residents to make sure they have working smoke detectors throughout their home, including sleeping areas and hallways outside sleeping areas.
