Prospect League seeks leader

Commissioner resigns position

The Prospect League is looking for a new commissioner and a first-time deputy commissioner following the resignation of Bryan Wickline.

Wickline had been commissioner of the 12-team summer collegiate wooden bat league — which includes the Butler BlueSox — for the past two years. He has opted to focus more time on his position as managing partner and president of the Chillicothe Paints.

BlueSox director Larry Sassone said Monday that no one from the Butler franchise will pursue either the commissioner or deputy commissioner post.

“The league is placing ads in various publications seeking candidates for those jobs,” Sassone said. “We have an executive committee that will do the interviewing for the commissioner.

“Once the commissioner is hired, that person will participate in the process of finding a deputy commissioner.”

The league commissioner will be responsible for business duties within the league, including public relations, accounting, legal issues, league-wide sponsorships, expansion, etc.

The deputy commissioner will work with member teams on the baseball operations, including rules interpretation, player contracts, umpires, statistics, etc.

“It’s a good idea, splitting that office into two roles,” said William “Wink” Robinson, one of the BlueSox owners. “That position is a lot of work for one person.

“Having two people in there will better serve the needs of the league.”

Sassone said there is a possibility of two expansion teams joining the league next season, though that process is only in its very early stages. He did not disclose the two potential sites.

“If you look at the league footprint, we need more teams on the eastern side,” Sassone said.

Canton (Ohio) and Parkersburg (W.Va.) had been mentioned as potential sites for Prospect League franchises.

“Anything there is only in the inquiring stages,” Robinson said. “There’s interest, but that may not mean anything.”

Sassone attended recent league meetings and said “some changes are in the works,” mentioning the probability of three divisions next season and possible changes to the playoff and all-star game formats.

“Nothing has been formally announced concerning those things,” Sassone said.

Prospect League president and Terre Haute Rex owner and general manager Bruce Rosselli is serving as interim commissioner until the position is filled.

The BlueSox will begin their ninth year in the league next spring.
