Knoch searches for identity

Knights looking to prove themselves against Montour

JEFFERSON TWP — Will the real Knoch Knights please stand up?

“We need to find out who we are,” coach Mike King admitted. “I don't believe we're the type of football team that gets blown out of games.

“We could learn a lot about ourselves this week.”

The Knights (1-3, 1-2) host Montour (2-2, 2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday. It will be the programs' first meeting since the Spartans defeated Knoch, 42-14, in the 2011 WPIAL Class AAA championship game at Heinz Field.

Knoch began the season with a 28-27 overtime loss to Blackhawk, victimized by kicking woes. Its other two losses are 42-0 at West Mifflin and 49-14 at South Fayette. In between those defeats was a 21-14 win over Highlands.

“It looks like South Fayette is the cream of the crop in this league,” King said of the Northwest Nine. “If we want to be in the playoff mix, we have to go get this one. There's not a whole lot of games left.

“I believe we match up well with this team. They've got some athletes, a quarterback who can run and throw, and an outstanding tailback.”

Junior quarterback Kavon Morman has thrown for 286 yards and run for 160 for the Spartans. His lone touchdown pass this season has been to Austin Deutsch, who is averaging 27 yards a catch. A linebacker defensively, Deutsch leads the team with 27 tackles.

Brayden Jones has 309 yards and six touchdowns.

Mac Christy continues to be the hub of Knoch's offense. He has thrown for 323 yards and three TDs — two of those to Zach Boldy — and has run for 492 yards and three scores.

“We haven't had a lot of opportunities to develop our passing game yet,” King said. “We're hoping to make some plays that way Friday and get some other people involved.”

Jayden Renfrew has rushed for 165 yards and caught five passes for 115 as an all-purpose back. Eric Green has four catches for 96 yards.

Montour is coming off a 38-0 shutout of Ambridge. The Spartans also defeated Knoch in the 2007 WPIAL semifinals, 32-6, and lead the series between the teams, 5-4.
