East Butler man charged with stealing dirt bike

DONEGAL TWP — An East Butler man is accused of breaking into a garage and stealing an $1,800 dirt bike more than a year ago.

He and an accomplice later sold the vehicle for a fraction of its value, authorities said.

State police Monday charged 31-year-old David Lee Herold with burglary, trespass, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and theft by deception, all felonies. He also is charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Investigators suspect Herold and Matthew K. Wiles, 23, of Chicora on June 21, 2015, went to Walter Wiles’ home on the 400 block of East Slippery Rock Street to steal the 2012 Kawasaki KLX dirt bike.

The suspects teamed up to smash a window at the garage and take the bike, which they rode back to Wiles’ home, police said.

Court documents did not identify the relationship between Matthew Wiles and the victim. Telephone calls to police Tuesday were not immediately returned.

Walter Wiles told police that he had recently bought the vehicle for his grandson.

During their investigation, police learned the bike had been sold to another man for $350.

Troopers on July 1, 2015, arrested Matthew Wiles in connection with the break-in and theft. Investigators later that month, interviewed Wiles at the Butler County Prison

He admitted his role in the crime, documents said, and implicated Herold.

Wiles, who originally faced the same charges as Herold, subsequently pleaded guilty to felony counts of theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

In exchange for his plea, court records showed, prosecutors dismissed the other charges.

He was sentenced in November to 7 to 14 months in the county prison followed by 5 years’ probation. He was credited with 147 days served.
