BETHEL TWP, Armstrong County — State police say a Western Pennsylvania man had two homemade bombs in his home when they went to arrest him on an unrelated warrant.

Online court records show 36-year-old Matt Strohm was awaiting arraignment today on charges of making weapons of mass destruction, risking a catastrophe and reckless endangerment.

Troopers say they found the bombs early Monday in Strohm’s home in Bethel Township, Armstrong County. Police say Strohm brandished a rifle and handgun when troopers arrived, so they called in a Special Emergency Response Team, which is the state police version of a SWAT team.

Police say the bombs were made from powdered chocolate milk containers filled with ball bearings, nails and an unspecified explosive material, then wrapped with duct tape.

Court records don’t list a defense attorney for Strohm.
