Woman charged with arson in home blaze

Initially thought to be an accident

Nichole Slagle, 31, of East Brady was charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to her ex-boyfriend’s home on Water Street on Wednesday night in Chicora.

State police also charged Slagle with criminal attempt burglary, criminal attempt trespass, criminal mischief, and loitering and prowling in the nighttime.

No one was home and there were no injuries. The estimated damage is around $7,000.

Jason Ramsey and his girlfriend’s 23-year-old daughter rent and live at the single-story, two-bedroom home, and were gone by 4 p.m. Wednesday. Ramsey said he got a call from a friend at about 9:15 p.m. telling him of the fire.

The fire was called in by a passing motorist, and the first fire crew was on the scene within two minutes.

Rick Craig, an assistant chief with the Chicora Volunteer Fire Department, said flames were seen coming from a bedroom window, and that the fire was coming from outside the window, which was fitted with an air conditioner.

A combined effort by about 30 firefighters from five departments was able to put out the fire. They remained on the scene for about two hours.

Initially, the fire was thought to be an accident, but an investigation by deputy state police fire marshal David Jungling led to the arson charge.

Police believe Slagle removed the air conditioner to get into the home, and apparently left through the same window.

The house, owned by Harley Flick of Chicora, was not insured, authorities said, and the occupants did not have renter’s insurance. The damaged window was eventually boarded up, and the electricity was turned off pending an inspection.
