Moniteau rolls past Keystone

Warriors' Nagy intercepts 2 passes, scores twice

KNOX — Chance Nagy made some big-time plays in the second half to help Moniteau pull away for the victory

The Warriors cruised to a 33-6 KSAC cross-over win over Keystone Friday at Keystone High School Football Field.

Moniteau (2-2) led 16-6 heading into the third quarter.

The second half was Nagy's time to shine; the quarterback ran in two touchdowns, and killed two Keystone drives with interceptions.

“He's a leader out there both ways,” said Moniteau coach Wade Vogan. “He gives 100 percent regardless of where he's at.”

Early in the third quarter, the Warriors took over near midfield. Two run plays advanced them to the Keystone 38.

Nagy broke free up the middle for the score, and Moniteau took a 23-6 lead with 8:24 to play in the third.

On Keystone's next drive, Nagy picked off Nate Wingard's pass at around the Keystone 45 and ran it to the 36.

Nagy and running back Corey Goyak took turns advancing the ball until Nagy scored from one yard out with 4:34 to play, allowing the Warriors to take a 30-6 lead.

“When he's under control of what's going on, it helps everybody else play a little better,” Vogan said of Nagy.

Nagy picked off another pass in the fourth quarter when Keystone (0-5) was driving in Moniteau territory.

“It was just watching the quarterback,” Nagy said. “We go over it in practice every single day. Just read the quarterback and wherever he looks that's where the ball is normally going to go, and I just read that perfectly.”

The Warriors tacked on one more score with just more than a minute to play, a 26-yard field goal by Steven Fawcett.

However, it was how they started the game that had the biggest impact. Dalton Anderson took the opening kickoff 76 yards for the score to give Moniteau the 7-0 lead just 11 seconds in.

“(Anderson) was hyped up, ready to roll and that set the tone for the game,” Vogan said.

Keystone's only score came with 5:14 to play in the first when Wingard connected with Austin Ion for a 31-yard touchdown pass.

The Panthers finished with 186 passing yards but minus-16 rushing yards on 14 carries.

“That's the main problem right now is we're not even running the ball with any kind of hint at success whatsoever,” said Keystone coach Dan Reed. “We're losing a couple yards every time we run the football, so it makes it tough to just throw the football down the field, and that's what the bottom line is.”

Moniteau quickly answered to Keystone's touchdown.

A long kick return by Tanner Wilson brought the ball to the 15, setting up Mitch DiMaria's 6-yard touchdown run for the 13-6 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter.

Fawcett nailed a 37-yard field goal with around three minutes to play in the first half to give the Warriors the 16-6 lead at halftime.
