Karns City uses big plays to blank Chucks

Gremlins improve to 4-1

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Karns City, aided by four scoring plays of over 50 yards, racked up 561 yards of total offense on its way to shutting out Punxsutawney, 47-0, Friday night on the road.

The win marked the Gremlins' first football shutout of the Chucks since 2008.

The Gremlins (4-1)opened the scoring in the first quarter when Chandler Turner ran 21 yards for a touchdown to give Karns City the 7-0 lead.

The rest of the first half belonged to KC wide receiver Kaiden Powers. He scored on runs of 86 and 66 yards on consecutive offensive plays to put his team up 20-0 less than a minute into the second quarter.

Karns City would add two passing touchdowns to their first half resume as quarterback Jacob King hit Clay Garing for 26 yards midway through the second and Turner for 75 yards on the last play of the first half.

King completed just six passes, but threw for 198 yards to lead the Gremlins, while Powers led the rushing attack with 168 yards on just four carries.

Eleven Karns City players had rushing attempts, as coach Ed Conto shuffled players in and out all game.

“We knew they were a young team,” Conto said, “so we basically played two units on offense. We played 20 or 21 players on offense in the first half.”

No running back had more than five rushing attempts for Karns City, as the Gremlins used their balanced running attack to amass 363 yards on the ground against the Chucks.

Conto knew going in to the game that his team would have some success running the ball against Punxsutawney (0-4).

“We saw on film that they would shift on defense to the tight end side,” Conto said. “So we just ran away from the shift and had some success.”

Karns City added two second half touchdowns by Cullen Williams on runs of 53 and 11 yards to close out the scoring. Williams ended the game with 79 yards rushing and 43 yards receiving.

As good as the offense was, Conto was pleased with his team's defensive effort as well.

“The defense was pretty good tonight, too,” Conto said.

Tyler Richardson led the Chucks with 63 yards rushing, while Dylan Ishman completed 11 passes for 54 yards in the losing effort.
