County fugitive caught after high-speed chase

Wanted in robbery case

TARENTUM, Allegheny County — A fugitive wanted in a Butler holdup was arrested early Saturday morning after leading police on a high-speed chase in northern Allegheny County, authorities said.

Troopers found 23-year-old Maurice A. Franklin shortly after midnight at his home in Tarentum, where he had run once he ditched his car, according to state police.

Franklin was later placed in the Armstrong County Jail to await his eventual destination — the Butler County Prison.

Butler police had been looking for the defendant since May, when he allegedly stole a woman’s wallet during an armed robbery at a Virginia Avenue home.

Franklin managed to remain on the lam until about 12:10 a.m. Saturday when troopers conducting a speed trap on Route 28 near the Armstrong-Allegheny County line clocked his car going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone, police said.

The suspected speeder refused to stop while leading troopers and local police on a pursuit through East Deer and Fawn townships. The vehicle chase ended in Tarentum, where he pulled into the parking lot of a dog-training business.

Police allege Franklin got out and ran about one block to his home on East Sixth Avenue, where he was nabbed. He faces fleeing and attempting to elude police and other charges.

It apparently wasn’t until after this arrest that authorities learned of the Butler arrest warrant.

In that case, city police said, Franklin is charged with robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, terroristic threats and theft.

According to court documents, police were called at 11:45 p.m. May 30 to Brandi Berry’s home in the 500 block of Virginia Avenue where they spoke to the alleged victim, 29-year-old Alicia Bures of Butler.

Bures, who lives nearby and was visiting Berry, told investigators that Franklin showed up at the home and they got into an argument. He allegedly dumped out the contents of her purse and took a wallet.

He is accused of brandishing a pistol and pointing it at her, police said.

“(Franklin) cocked the gun and told (Berry) to get her son out of the house because it was about to get ugly,” a police affidavit said.

Wallet in hand, the defendant fled, police said. No injuries were reported.

Officers searched for the suspect, including at his then home in the 300 block of Virginia Avenue, but could not find him.

Police in their complaint against Franklin noted that his criminal record prohibits him from possessing any firearms under state law.
