Fugitive caught after chase

A fugitive wanted in a Butler holdup was arrested early Saturday morning after leading police on a high-speed chase in northern Allegheny County, authorities said.

Troopers found 23-year-old Maurice A. Franklin shortly after midnight at his home in Tarentum, where he had run once he ditched his car, according to state police.

Franklin was later placed in the Armstrong County Jail to await his eventual destination — the Butler County Prison.

Butler police had been looking for the defendant since May, when he allegedly stole a woman’s wallet during an armed robbery at a Virginia Avenue home.

Franklin managed to remain on the lam until about 12:10 a.m. Saturday when troopers conducting a speed trap on Route 28 near the Armstrong-Allegheny County line clocked his car going 87 mph in a 55 mph zone, police said.
