SV nips Butler in hockey finale

Late goal gives Raiders 3-2 win

HARMARVILLE — Tyler Murphy scored the game-winning goal 14:37 into the third period Tuesday night as Seneca Valley nipped Butler, 3-2, in the finals of the hockey preseason St. Margaret Tournament at Harmarville Blade Runners.

The game was scoreless after one period, 2-2 after the second frame. Noah Watkiss and Giovanni Sarachine scored for the Raiders. Ben Rodgers scored both Golden Tornado goals, assisted by Sam Gross.

Butler had a 23-22 edge in shots on goal. Dylan Sloat was SV's goaltender while Bryce Rearick was between the pipes for Butler.

Earlier Seneca Valley wins in the tournament included 8-1 over Upper St. Clair and 3-1 over Franklin Regional. Watkiss had two goals and an assist against USC while Sloat made 34 saves.

Sarachine, Robert Sheils and Zachary Brosky scored against Franklin Regional.

Butler defeated Greater Latrobe, 4-2, and North Allegheny, 6-4, earlier in the tournament.

Trevor Gilliland scored three goals and Gross one in the win over Greater Latrobe. The Tornado rallied with three goals late in the third period to defeat North Allegheny.

Gilliland, Garet Banner and Rodgers scored those goals for Butler. Clay Potochny scored twice earlier in the game.

The PIHL regular season begins next month.
