'Jackets facing speedy Quips

BUFFALO TWP — When Aliquippa visits Freeport Friday night, the Yellowjackets are going to see the Quips' “A” game.

Freeport coach John Gaillot likes it that way.

“Somebody awoke the giant last week,” Gaillot said, referencing Beaver's 28-14 upset win at Aliquippa. “We know they'll be bringing their 'A' game and we want to face them at their best.”

The Quips' loss last week ended their 62-game regular season winning streak. Included in that run were wins of 44-28 at New Castle and 44-13 at Beaver Falls this season.

The Yellowjackets have never defeated Aliquippa. They are 0-4 against the Quips, including last year's 36-14 WPIAL Class AA semifinal loss. The teams haven't met in Freeport since a 29-22 Aliquippa win in 2002.

“We're excited to be hosting a team of this caliber,” Gaillot said. “We're so young and I can't get over how well our younger players and first-year starters have responded so far.

“This is a non-conference game and meaningless to us in terms of the playoffs. Where it's meaningful is in how well we play against them. I'll be looking at the eyes of our kids as they come off the field. Is the fire there? Are we scared? That's what I'll be looking for.”

Davion Jones leads Aliquippa with 277 yards rushing and 5.8 yards per carry. Avante McKenzie has 210 yards rushing — eight yards per carry — and five touchdowns.

Quarterback Kwantell Raines has thrown for more than 200 yards and has rushed for three TDs.

“You know that team has speed and we can't simulate that in practice,” Gaillot said. “That's why we scrimmaged Westinghouse this year. They broke off a couple of long runs, then we started taking better angles to the ball.”

Quarterback Austin Romanchak has rushed for 177 yards and thrown for 146 for Freeport (2-0). Conor Sellinger has rushed for 134 yards.
