Patterson leading Eagles' surge

Record-setting QB has Grove City 2-0

GROVE CITY — Kameron Patterson desperately wanted to expunge the feeling he had after his junior season.

Following a breakout sophomore campaign as the Grove City High quarterback, Patterson regressed a bit as a junior as the Eagles struggled through a trying 1-9 season.

“I just had to know I could do it,” Patterson said. “And do it every play.”

Patterson, now a senior and tested by adversity, is having a resurgence.

It's no surprise his team is having one, too.

Patterson has started the 2016 season with sparkling statistics. He is completing 66 percent of his passes for 338 yards and six touchdowns.

But the biggest number is his smallest — zero interceptions.

“He's not making mistakes,” said Grove City coach Sam Mowrey. “He's still taking his shots, but he is playing with confidence and making good decisions.”

Patterson became the school's all-time leader in career passing yards last week in a 43-20 win over Warren.

With 3,548 passing yards in 22 games as quarterback, Patterson eclipsed Brian Cavanaugh, who played for the Eagles from 1990-92.

“It feels very good, especially to get it early in the season,” Patterson said. “It's always our focus to win more games, but it's nice to get this out of the way.”

Patterson has clicked with sophomore wide receiver Logan Lutz.

The two have already hooked up for four touchdowns this season, including three in the win last week.

“I know if I throw it in his direction, he's going to be able to come down with it,” Patterson said. “He goes up and attacks the ball. He's one of those kids that brings a spark and sets a fire.”

Grove City has been playing like its quarterback — with something to prove.

The Eagles rallied for 20 points in the fourth quarter to beat General McLane in Week Zero and then scored at will in the first half against Warren, putting up all 43 of their points in the first half.

“We've just been coming out with an edge,” Patterson said. “We've been playing fast and physical. We have a lot of returning players from last year and we've made leaps and bounds.”

Mowrey has seen that improvement as well.

The coaching staff filtered out the things that hadn't worked so well the first two seasons of their regime and focused more on the things they did well.

A lot of that started with Patterson.

“He's a year better and a year more confident,” Mowrey said. “He knows we have a line that will protect for him and guys around him that will make plays.”

In addition to Lutz, Patterson has receiving weapons in A.J. Turner, Trey Adams, Nick Davies and Brayden Martin.

Grove City is also running the ball much better than a year ago, which has taken a lot of pressure off Patterson.

Last year, Patterson led the team in rushing.

“Running the ball was first and foremost on the list of things we needed to improve,” Mowrey said. “We've been continually harping on that.”

Adams already has 183 yards rushing this season and Patterson, who also led the team in rush attempts a year ago, hasn't had to carry that burden with just six rushes for 13 yards this season.

Still, the Eagles and Patterson know it's a long season and 2-0 doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, especially with another challenge facing them at Conneaut Friday night.

“Those two weeks can get erased quickly if we don't continue to do what we're supposed to do,” Mowrey said.
