Mars, KC, Slippery Rock boys soccer post shutouts

Butler volleyball tops NC

Emily Archer had six kills and six aces Tuesday night to lead the Butlergirls volleyball team to a 3-1 home victory over New Castle.

Scores of the match were 25-13, 25-6, 16-25, 25-5. The Golden Tornado (1-0) played their junior varsity uinit in the third game.

Taylor Stein added three aces and four digs, Tabitha Walker 15 assists and two kills. Butler did not win a match all of last season.

The Tornado play at Mars Thursday.

Union 3, Venango Catholic 0 — Taylor Adams totaled 14 aces and Hannah Atzeni 16 assists as Union's girls volleyball team swept Venango Catholic.

Frankee Remmick added five aces and five kills. Bryn Davis had six kills and Vanessa Reddick four aces for the Damsels, who won by scores of 25-13, 25-16 and 25-15.

Freeport 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Katie Zingaro had nine kills and eight blocks to lead the Yellowjackets (1-1) to a 25-2, 25-7, 25-5 win.

Allison DeJidas added seven kills and three blocks and Claire Crytzer 19 digs and 13 service points.

Knoch 3, Mars 1 — Sarah Armahizer had 16 kills and six blocks and Abby Pospisil added 13 service points, four aces and seven kills as the Knights toppled the Planets 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 25-20.

Makenzie McDowell pitched in 16 points and Carly Bozzo 22 digs for Knoch (1-0, 1-0).

Boys Golf

Denny Wuyscik carded a 39 to pace Freeport to a 214-225 win against Knoch at Saxon Golf Course.

The victory improved the Yellowjackets to 7-1 on the season.

Jack Bartek shot a 42 to lead Knoch (1-5).

Kennedy DeMatteis shot a 41 to lead Moniteau to a victory in a KSAC MegaMatch played at Wanango Country Club.

The Warriors finished with 239 total strokes, one ahead of runner-up Karns City.

A-C Valley/Union's Ethan Nevel and Karns City's duo of Hunter Gifford and Logan Pistorius all carded a 42.

Boys Soccer

Cory Ferguson, Ryan McGuire and Shane Lisman all scored for Mars in a 3-0 shutout of Knoch.

Karns City 4, Elk County Catholic 0 — Spenser Myers tallied two goals for the Gremlins, while Noah Pollock and Jace Ebbitt both scored one.

Jake Weckerly recorded the shutout in his first game in goal.

Slippery Rock 8, West Middlesex 0 — Garrett Dougherty, Jimmy Gallagher and Ryan Davis each scored two goals to lead the Rockets (1-2).

Cross Country

Slippery Rock's Nick Shea placed second overall as Slippery Rock's boys defeated Sharpsville 26-33.

On the girls' side, the Rockets fell 24-35, with Harley Phlugh finishing in second place.
