New faces abound for Freeport

Freeport's Matt Charlton (66), Austin Kemp (54), and Ryan Weigold celebrate a Yellowjackets' win last season. Charlton and Kemp return in 2016 to anchor an offensive line that will block for a slew of new skill players.

FREEPORT — The offense will be the same. The names will definitely be different.

Freeport is coming off a 10-2 season and an appearance in the WPIAL Class AA semifinals, largely due to an offense that featured quarterback Ryan Weuigold throwing for 2,237 yards, Ian Miller rushing for 1,100, receivers Brandon and Dylan Hochbein, Justin Brestensky and Josh Beale combining for 131 catches, more than 2,000 yards and 28 touchdowns.

All of those players have graduated, as has defensive lineman Logan Thimons, a record-setting tackler who is now at West Virginia University.

“We lost plenty of firepower, that's for sure,” Yellowjacket coach John Gaillot said. “But we don't believe in the word rebuilding around here. We are restructuring.

“We'll find the right people for the right spots and we'll run that spread offense again. It's effective for us. We may use the tight end a little more, but it will be the same type of attack.”

The only four starters returning offensively for Freeport are linemen — junior 285-pound left tackle Matt Charlton, senior left guard Travis Wisniewski, 260-pound center Noah Freeman and right guard Austin Kemp.

“We have new guys in the skilled positions who will make plays,” Freeman said. “It's good to have a veteran line up front. We can lead the way.”

Originally one of three quarterback candidates, Anthony Aulicino will likely play tight end for the Yellowjackets. The other two battling for play behind center are junior Jake Sarver and sophomore Austin Romanchak.

It may not matter who wins the job.

“Both of those guys will be on the field somewhere,” Gaillot said. “Along with Anthony, they are three of our better athletes.”

Running backs will come from Mike Delk, Matt Straughn and Conor Selinger. Receivers include senior Evan Schaffhauser, sophomore Evan McCrea and freshmen Isiah Bauman and Brodey Woods.

Luke Kennedy, a junior, looks to be the tight end.

“We've got some freshmen and sophomores who can run and catch the football. We're going to see what they can do because we like to throw the ball,” Gaillot said.

Charlton said the line will work with the inexperience at the skill spots.

“It's all about reading the play and finding the hole,” he said. “Our backs can do that. We'll see how it unfolds in Week 1. I'm pretty confident everything will come together.”

The Yellowjackets will play a base 34 defense. They return only two starters on that side of the ball in cornerback Sarver and tackle Freeman.

Other defensive linemen will come from Ryan Kane, Jacob Goldinger, Cody Bargerstock and Kemp. Aulicino, Delk, McCrea, Kennedy, Jarrett Dougherty and Wisniewski will spend time at linebacker.

“We can rotate guys in and out, spell guys offensively and defensively,” Gaillot said.

Sarver will shift to safety while Romanchak, Chris Palmiere, Isiah Bauman, Straughn and Schaffhauser are all in the mix at cornerback.

Now in Class 3A in the PIAA's new six-division alignment, Freeport will still play familiar foes in Apollo-Ridge, Valley, Burrell and Shady Side Academy. Keystone Oaks and Seton LaSalle are newcomers to the section.

“Keystone Oaks looks like the team to beat to me,” Gaillot said.

As for his team, he admits it will be a work in progress.

“We've got a lot of young kids,” Gaillot said. “Much of our success will depend on how fast they grow up and mature.

“Going into this season, we certainly have a lot of questions. Hopefully, we'll get positive answers.”
