Familiar foes set to battle

Moniteau, St. Marys meeting yet again

CHERRY TWP — Moniteau and St. Marys have history.

A lot of it recent.

Moniteau beat the Flying Dutch twice last year, 29-28 late in the regular season and 17-6 in the District 9 Class AA semifinals.

In 2014, St. Marys won both meetings, including a 7-6 playoff slugfest.

For the fifth time in 25 months, the two teams will tangle again in the season opener at 7 p.m. Friday at Moniteau.

There will be no playoff rematch this year; the Warriors (2-A) and Dutch (3-A) are now in different classes.

“St. Marys does what St. Marys does,” said Moniteau coach Wade Vogan. “They try to bait you into putting nine guys in the box to stop their run, then they try to beat you deep. Hopefully, we can stop the run so we can't be baited.”

St. Marys returns three of its most important skill players from last season.

Senior Pat Schlimm is back under center after completing 54-of-109 passes for 960 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Also returning is the Dutch's two leading rushers from last season, senior Christian Steffan, who gained 821 yards on the ground, and senior Matt Marconi, who rushed for 644 yards.

St. Marys will have to replace receiver Brady Bauer, who had 31 receptions for 568 yards and five TDs last season.

Moniteau knows a thing or two about replacing stars. The Warriors have to replace 92 percent of their offense this season.

But Vogan believes he has found those players.

Dalton Anderson had a huge camp and scrimmages for the Warriors and will line up at multiple positions.

Chance Nagy won the battle of sophomores against Hunter Fitzingo to be the starting quarterback.

“Chance is shifty and chimes in with what we want to do with the quarterback position, running the ball,” Vogan said. “Hunter also had a good camp and it's a good thing to have them both.”

Vogan said he was very displeased with his team's performance in their first scrimmage, but the Warriors redeemed themselves with a strong effort last week in the second scrimmage.

“It was like night and day,” Vogan said. “The first scrimmage there was no emotion, no intensity and I think it made them realize how important it is to come together and come out with some fire.”
