[naviga:h3]Supermarket to sell wine starting Friday[/naviga:h3]

PITTSBURGH — A grocery store in Western Pennsylvania is selling wine for the first time since Prohibition.

Giant Eagle will sell wine at the store in Robinson Township beginning on Friday.

A Pittsburgh newspaper reports store officials and Republican House Speaker Mike Turzai plan a ceremonial champagne toast to mark the occasion.

Turzai was the primary sponsor of a wine privatization bill that was signed into law in June.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board says it has approved 81 supermarkets, restaurants and hotels to sell wine to go.

About 35 Giant Eagle stores currently sell beer.

[naviga:h3]Jobless rate ends 5-month streak[/naviga:h3]

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s unemployment stopped rising in July, although it remains well above the national rate.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday that the jobless rate remained at 5.6 percent in July, after a five-month streak that saw it rise from 4.6 percent in January. The national rate was 4.9 percent in July.

[naviga:h3]McGinty, Toomey split on Iran deal[/naviga:h3]

HARRISBURG — Katie McGinty, Pennsylvania’s Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, says the United States should never pay ransoms for prisoners, but she’s not criticizing the Obama administration’s $400 million cash delivery to Iran seven months ago.

McGinty said Friday that she expects “further facts” will come out about the payment and she still stands by President Barack Obama’s nuclear accord with Iran. Republican incumbent Pat Toomey opposes the Iran nuclear deal and has been critical of the payment to Iran.

Republican lawmakers are calling the payment a ransom. The Obama administration says the payment was contingent on the release of American prisoners, but contends the payment wasn’t ransom because the Islamic Republic would have soon recouped the money it was owed.
