DRUMMING UP BBQ — Middlesex Township volunteer firefighters, from left, Emmett Norris, Mike Hutchison and Jay Shemela were handling real chicken drumsticks Aug. 16, 1976, when the department held its annual chicken barbecue benefit at the firehall in Cooperstown. Barbecued chicken halves in insulated bags were sold at a roadside “mini-barbecue” two miles south of Cooperstown at Denny Road and Route 8.
