Drama at The KAP

BlueSox rally past W. Va. for walk-off win

Butler’s Prospect League baseball game against West Virginia Friday night seemed to be headed for an all too familiar result for the BlueSox.

Errors contributed to five combined runs scored by the Miners in the seventh and eighth innings, turning a 4-1 Sox lead into a 6-5 deficit as Butler came to bat in the bottom of the ninth.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Nick Stotler laced a James Doubet pitch to left field, where Dylan Harvey elected to let the ball bounce in front of him. Kristian Webb raced around third and scored to tie the game and when the ball bounced over Harvey’s head, Tyler Niemann was waved home and scored easily to end a dramatic 7-6 victory for Butler at Kelly Automotive Park.

The win was even more satisfying considering how the Sox let a 7-3 lead slip away in a 13-10 loss in the night’s first game.

“We’ve lost a lot of games like this during the season,” said Butler manager Jason Radwan. “It’s nice to finally pull one out.”

Moments before Stotler came to the plate, the Sox were down to their last strike. With two outs, Doubet was in front of Webb 0-2. But Butler’s designated hitter fouled off four pitches and worked the count to 2-2 before reaching base on an infield single. Niemann then kept Butler alive with a base hit.

“We had some really good at-bats there in the ninth,” said Radwan. “It was good to see because earlier in the game, those guys had taken a lot of strikes. This adds to their confidence.”

After Butler starter Pavin Parks and Jack Herzing had given up the five runs (three earned) in the seventh and eighth, reliever Shawn Holman settled things down by pitching a scoreless top of the ninth with three strikeouts.

Holman has struggled out of the bullpen this season, but his latest effort set the table for Butler’s offense to win the game.

“He’s been working with our coaches and he has good stuff,” Radwan said. “When he’s around the zone, he’s tough to hit.”

Trailing 4-1, the Miners (12-11) scored twice in the seventh to pull within one run.

Parks was on the mound to start the inning, which began with Tre Porter reaching on an error. With one out, Robinson Mateo was hit by a pitch and Keanan Locke walked to load the bases.

Porter scored on Nick Delgado’s infield single, which ended Parks’ night in favor of Nolan Krivijanski.

Taylor Hillson then grounded into what appeared to be a 6-4-3 double play, but it was ruled that he beat out the throw at first base, allowing Mateo to score to cut Butler’s lead to 4-3.

“I didn’t get much of an explanation from the umpire,” said Radwan. “He just said the runner beat the throw and to me it was clear that he didn’t. But it was a judgement call and the umpires are out there doing their best.”

Krivijanski got out of the inning with Butler (9-13) still leading, but the Miners managed a run-scoring single from Harvey and a two-run double from Jordan Branz in the next inning with Herzing on the mound.

Butler right-fielder Dillon Sunnafrank went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the game. His two-run single keyed the team’s 3-run second inning. He drove in his third run with a single in the sixth.
