CUP softball tourney slated next weekend

CRANBERRY TWP — Cranberry CUP, which stands for Community Uniting People, will hold its annual softball tournament and other events next weekend.

Some of the proceeds from the events will go to benefit the Majcan family of Cranberry, who were named as 2016’s inspirational family in March.

The CUP, which is in its 17th year, raises money to benefit people or families in need who live in the Seneca Valley School District.

Jordan Majcan, 17, a senior at Seneca Valley High School, was severely injured in a car crash the week of Thanksgiving, leaving him temporarily paralyzed.

Volunteers with the CUP have been gathering donations and working to build a wheelchair-accessible expansion to the Majcan’s home on Robinhood Drive.

Among the improvements planned for the addition are a larger bathroom with a wheelchair-accessible shower stall. It is being built in the backyard and connected to the back of the house.

The weekend’s events typically raise more than $100,000 for the organization’s recipients, said board secretary Robin Shaffer. The organization has raised $1.2 million since its inception and accepts donations throughout the year on its Website.

A golf tournament will be held Friday at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course with registration at 9:30 a.m. and tee-off at 11 a.m.

A kickoff party for the weekend also will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at the golf course.

Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. there will be a 5k run and walk starting at Graham Park. The event also includes a 1-mile run for children.

The softball tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday in Cranberry Community Park.
