Leonard Stoughton

Leonard J. Stoughton, 83, of Lickingville, Pa., passed away Friday at his home, after a brief illness.

Born March 24, 1933, in Hooker, he was the son of the late Grover Cleveland and Ethel “Mae” Wiles Stoughton.

On Oct. 1, 1965, in Mercer, he married the former Nancy M. Zerres Stoughton, who survives.

He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Shippenville.

Leonard was a truck driver when he was first married, and in 1969, he started Stoughton Recycling, a scrap business, in Chicora. He took a few years off from the scrap business until about 1989, when he opened Triple S Recycling in Slippery Rock. On Feb. 4, 1994, he moved the business to its current location in Lickingville, Pa. Then on June 26, 1995, he turned the business over to his sons as a partnership. Leonard still remained active in the business, helping his sons by running errands for the next year until his health deteriorated.

When he was not at the scrap yard, Leonard enjoyed attending stock car races and auctions. He also collected replica miniature cars and lighthouses. He also enjoyed watching and listening to both the Pirates and the Steelers games.

Leonard is survived by his wife, Nancy; his children, Patricia G. Johnson and her husband, David, of Slippery Rock, John C. Stoughton Sr. and his wife, Theresa, of Lickingville, Pa., and Robert J. (Johnson) Dombeck and her husband, Stephen, who she married July 2, 2016, of Slippery Rock; and two stepgranddaughters, Heather Johnson of MacDonald, Pa., and Shayla Ganci of Snydersburg, Pa. He also is survived by four step-great-grandchildren, Dylan and Emma Delaney of MacDonald, Pa., and Nathan Roberts and Aubrey Ganci of Snydersburg, Pa.; his sister, Grace Libecco of Chicora; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Laura Mae; two brothers, John Stoughton and Charles “Buster” Stoughton; and two sisters, Irene Cumberland and Mary “Toots” McCrea.
