Energy truths

Regarding “Dems’ energy platform is totally out of touch” (July 20) by Merrill Matthews of the Institute for Policy Innovation.

Matthews and the Institute for Policy Innovation promote the continued use of fossil fuels despite the overwhelming science showing the harm these industries are doing to our climate. The only climatologists who disagree are mostly ones working for the fossil fuel industries.

For Matthews to claim that the decline of the fossil fuel industries will result in a devastating loss of jobs is misstating our current reality.

Bloomberg reports that, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, clean energy jobs worldwide increased from 7.7 million in 2014 to 8.1 million in 2015. Bloomberg’s chart shows that there are now more U.S. jobs in clean energy (solar, liquid biofuels, biomass and wind) than in oil, gas and coal extraction.

Providing misinformation for these obsolete and climate-damaging industries is not helping our progress, our health or the continued livability of our home planet.

The fossil fuel industry’s abuse of our planet would continue until there is nothing left of their resources, and the possibility of us saving ourselves from extinction without strong government regulation to turn the tide. There is nothing “alleged” about what Exxon has done to manufacture lies concerning their impact on the climate.
