PITTSBURGH — A woman is in custody after authorities say she fatally stabbed her brother in the kitchen of her home after they got into a fight.

Monica Brown, 30, of Pittsburgh was charged Sunday with homicide in the slaying of 27-year-old Machi Brown.

Investigators say the altercation started Saturday night when Monica Brown confronted her brother for allegedly slapping his girlfriend. Brown told police she grabbed a knife when he attacked her. Detectives say she stabbed him twice.

[naviga:h3]UPMC hepatitis lawsuits reinstated[/naviga:h3]

PITTSBURGH — A Pennsylvania appeals court panel is reinstating several lawsuits against UPMC and a staffing agency after patients contracted hepatitis C from a former UPMC employee.

The suits, filed in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court in 2012, accuse the defendants of negligence in failing to report the theft of fentanyl by a radiology technician at UPMC Presbyterian in 2008.

The technician, David Kwiatkowski, would inject the pain medicine into his own body and then refill the used syringes and place them back among the hospital’s medical supplies.
