Fire destroys barn

MUDDY CREEK TWP — A weekend fire destroyed a wooden barn packed with round hay bales, authorities said.

The Saturday night blaze at the Lutz farm on Bauder School Road is not considered suspicious but a cause will likely never be known, said Chief Tim Saunders of the Portersville-Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department.

Investigators did not rule out that spontaneous hay combustion could have started the fire that broke out about 10:20 p.m. The barn also had electrical service connected to it.

The owners were home when they spotted the fire and called 911. They also cautioned that there were numerous fuel cans inside.

Fire crews were quickly on scene but did not report seeing or hearing any explosions come from the pole barn, about 32 by 60 feet.

“The fire was pretty well involved when we got there,” said Brooke Seifert, assistant fire chief.
