The Steelers have released veteran tight end Matt Spaeth with a failed physical designation one week before they report to training camp at Saint Vincent College.

Spaeth played for the Steelers in seven of his nine NFL seasons. He was a third-round draft choice in 2007 and played for the team through the 2010 season. He signed as a free agent with Chicago and played for the Bears for two seasons before re-signing with the Steelers in 2013.

Spaeth’s second go-round with the Steelers was plagued by injuries. He missed 16 games over the past three seasons, including three last season. He had offseason knee surgery and did not recover in time to participate in training camp, according to GM Kevin Colbert.

“Matt never fully recovered from knee surgery that occurred this past offseason, and he will not be ready to return to football activities at this time,” Colbert said. “Matt played an integral role in our Super Bowl XLIII championship run, and we wish him the best.”

Spaeth released a statement through the Steelers.

“What a journey it has been! I am so grateful for my time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the greatest franchise in football,” he said. “I would like to thank the Rooneys, coach Tomlin and Kevin Colbert for giving me the opportunity to play professional football. I also want to thank the coaching staff, my teammates and the best fans in the NFL, Steelers Nation. It truly was an honor to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

Spaeth had 55 receptions for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. He was better known for his blocking and served mostly as a backup to Heath Miller during his two stints with the Steelers.
