Numerous sightings of missing man

Story was last seen wearing these clothes, with a bright orange shirt underneath

There have been numerous sightings over the past few days of a man who has been missing from New Castle since 2013, according to his sister, but she is surprised that he left in the first place: “This is not a thing my brother would do.”

Christopher Sean Story, 42, left his home back in 2013 and has been missing but seen in the local area ever since, his sister, Shana Story Hall, said. As recently as Friday morning, Chris was seen in Butler and Eau Claire areas, Shana said.

Chris was a typical guy, Shana said. He used to work for the Pepsi Bottling Group in Erie, Pa., and he has a 15-year-old daughter, but back in 2009, he started having hallucinations, she said.

“They just progressively got worse,” she said, recalling one time that he called her about seeing multiple dogs in his yard that were not actually there.

While Chris sought help and was taking anti-depressants to help improve his symptoms, there was never a definitive answer.

In fact, when Chris took off on Aug. 11, 2013, he was meant to go back to the doctor for more tests that next week, Shana said.

“He wanted to know why, why he couldn't see things other people couldn't see,” she said. “He wanted to be fixed. He did make the effort, absolutely.”

Shana said the doctors think Chris may have experienced a mental breakdown.

Around 3 a.m. on Aug. 11, 2013, Chris was reported to the police for knocking on people's doors and asking where he could find a probation officer, Shana said.

“By the time my dad got down there, he was gone. He just vanished,” she said. “We went to his house, and he had an 11-year-old Rottweiler mix that was the love of his life. He had his clothes all set out, he left behind his house keys ... He didn't lock the door, he just walked out of the house and wasn't seen again.”

Facebook posts and information Shana has received places Chris around the Eau Claire area. A picture sent to Shana Friday morning put Chris on Route 68 near Sligo, she said.

Shana also heard Chris often eats dinner at the Grapevine Center in Butler.

People who have spoken to Chris or seen him have said that he mentions how he is not taking his medication and that his family does not want him to return home.

“He told a girl (who ran into him) his whole life story,” Shana said. “He knows who he is, he's telling people who he is and that he's from New Castle. But he's saying the family doesn't want him ... That's heartbreaking, because that's very far from the truth — very, very far.”

Shana said she was basically inseparable from Chris when they were growing up.

“Chris and I, we were always extremely close when we were kids,” she said. “He'd take me fishing, he taught me how to ride a bike, how to roller skate. My brother was always the one who did stuff with me.”

Shana has been the one to lead the family search for her brother, she said.

“I've been the one that's kind of had to step up and be the person to do everything,” she said. “We've done several search parties, we've had psychics, we've been on the news a few times. We've had the cadaver dogs, the search and rescue dogs. You name it, we've done it. We had a benefit two years ago.”

Despite all the family has done, Shana can't understand how they still have not been able to find Chris. Although the people who see him and recognize him as missing call the police, Chris moves on to the next place before anybody can get there.

“He's hitching rides so by the time we get to one place, he's got a ride to another place,” Shana said.

The New Castle Police Department has been leading the search for him, but Shana said that it's a small department.

“A grown man who took off from his family, they don't think about it as a high priority,” she said. “I don't want to say that they haven't helped, because they have absolutely. But now, (police have told us) 'he's alive, this is a good thing.'”

Knowing that he's alive may be good news, but the family still suffers and the feels strain of his disappearance, she said.

“If he knew what my family was going through, he would be devastated. We are a very close family,” Shana said. “The fact that he's missing is something that no family should ever have to go through. It's hard, and I love him to death, and I want him to get the help that he needs. He's literally right under my fingertips ...”
