Another gold coin donated

A South African Krugerrand was given to the Zelienople Friends of the Park.

ZELIENOPLE — The legend of the anonymous gold coin donor in the borough continues.

Zelienople Friends of the Park received a gold coin, a South African Krugerrand, during the Fourth of July weekend in a coin drive that the park was running, according to Alecia Flood, community parks director.

“We were very surprised again,” Flood said. “The anonymous person’s generosity is much appreciated.”

The Krugerrand dates to 1978 and weighs one ounce.

This is the second coin donated in the borough this year.

A $50 Walking Liberty Centennial was given to the borough library in late May. It is expected to be sold in mid-August for at least $1,300.

One coin has been donated to community efforts since 2009. The identity of the donor remains anonymous.

“People ask and ask all the time, but no one has ever come forward or admitted to it,” Flood said.

Last year, a $20 Liberty coin dated 1898 was donated to help fund the borough’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration.

A Canadian $20 one-ounce gold coin donated to the park was sold in 2014 for $1,225.

A Krugerrand was donated last year to help fund the borough’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration. It was sold for about $1,200.

Flood said with economic trends pointing toward the price of gold going up this election year, the most recent donated coin could go for as much as $1,500.

“Gold is typically higher at elections,” Flood said. “The highest we ever had was $1,500 during the last election.”

She said the Krugerrand will be sold by the end of the year. Money received will be used to pay for this year’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration.

Flood said the amount of donations from the coin drive and other sources alone were not enough to pay for the celebration.

“Thank you to that person. We really appreciate it,” she said of the donor.
