5:20 p.m. Tuesday — Stacy L. Bastian, 44, of Renfrew was arrested after she was caught allegedly shoplifting two energy drinks valued at $4 at the Dollar General store on Route 68. Police said they also found her with pills for which she apparently did not have a prescription.

Bastian, who has four prior shoplifting convictions, was arraigned on a felony charge of retail theft and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance. She was placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.

Tuesday — Police charged Paul A. Thompson, 50, of Buffalo Township with repeatedly using his employer’s fuel card to buy gas for his personal vehicles. He is accused of racking up $702 in unauthorized gas purchases between Feb. 9 and July 3.

Thompson, at the time of the alleged theft, worked for a landscaping company. One of the company’s owners notified police after discovering the unauthorized charges while reviewing the firm’s financial records.

In all, according to court documents, the suspect used the business’ fuel card on 16 separate occasions at the Planet Mart in Mars to buy gasoline for his own vehicles and not the company trucks, which only use diesel fuel. Police said they obtained surveillance video from the store to substantiate the charges.

Thompson is charged with 16 counts each of access device fraud, theft and receiving stolen property.

7:59 p.m. June 30 — Police arrested an allegedly intoxicated and disorderly man and later released him into the custody of his stepmother.

Two officers responded to a house on North Jefferson Street after a pedestrian reported seeing an intoxicated male drive through a stop sign and park there, according to court records.

Robert J. McCandless, 27, answered the door of the house. He appeared impaired and angry and demanded to know who reported him to the police. He was arrested after not heeding multiple warnings from the officers to calm down. Police said he also raised his cell phone above his head, which they perceived as a threat, documents said.

McCandless is charged with misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct — unreasonable noise and disorderly conduct — engaging in fighting and a summary charge for public drunkenness.

Sunday — Jeffrey Curtis Smith, 54, of Butler was arrested for suspicion of drunken driving on Route 68 in Forward Township.

Police said they found Smith sleeping in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck that was on the side of the highway just east of Buhl Road with its emergency flashers on. He eventually awakened after a trooper opened the passenger door.

A passenger also was sleeping in the truck, which reeked of alcohol, according to court documents. Police said Smith also had a “strong odor” of alcohol on his breath and appeared intoxicated.

Smith told the trooper that he was returning home from a concert and ran out of gas, documents said. He also admitted that he had consumed alcohol earlier that evening. He was arrested after failing several field sobriety tests.

A subsequent breath test at the barracks showed Smith’s blood alcohol level was 0.161 percent, documents said, or double the state’s 0.08 percent legal limit. He is charged with driving under the influence.

1:29 p.m. Sunday — A Butler County motorcyclist was hurt in a two-vehicle crash in Rockland Township. But Monte K. Pursifull, 62, of Evans City, who was wearing a helmet, suffered only apparent minor injuries and declined medical treatment.

Police said Pursifull lost control of his 2006 Honda Gold Wing after he applied his brakes as a sport utility vehicle slowed in front of him on Route 322 at Peg A Nal Road. The cycle’s tires locked up and the bike fell onto it side, sending Pursifull onto the road.
