CRANBERRY TWP — Sam Breen had waited long enough.

So the 6-foot-2 senior forward on the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic girls basketball team made the biggest decision of her life.

On a Wednesday night at 11 p.m.

Breen, who has a rare skill set for a post player — she can dominate inside as well as shoot from the perimeter, drive the lane and handle the ball — verbally committed to the University of Dayton.

“I knew from the moment I visited,” said Breen, who took her first trip to Dayton this winter. “I had that good feeling in my gut. I wanted to commit for awhile, but my dad made me wait.”

The wait is over.

“My dad talked to them late (Wednesday night) and they told him they had only one more spot (for a post player),” Breen said. “I called them back and committed right then.”

For Breen, who was getting attention from many other Division I schools, it was a relief to finally make the decision.

“It feels like a huge weight off my shoulders,” said Breen, who was looking online for Dayton Flyer gear with her father Thursday afternoon before she went to see the movie Finding Dory. “I hung out with the team and coaches and I got to see them play twice this year. I saw them play Duquesne and a good amount of their players were hurt and they still took them to overtime. Duquesne was a very good team.”

Dayton was 14-15 last season and 7-9 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Before she committed, St. Bonaventure and Bowling Green had begun recruiting the Trojanettes' star.

But Breen already knew where she wanted to go.

“Talking to them made me realize I didn't want to go anywhere else other than Dayton,” Breen said.

The Flyers are getting a dangerous weapon.

As a junior, Breen averaged 26.6 points per game this winter, but was even better in the playoffs as North Catholic made a run to the PIAA Class A state title.

Breen averaged 29.2 points in the state playoffs and put up 27 points to go with 13 rebounds in the championship-game rout of Lourdes Regional.

She was named PIAA Class Player of the Year and was also named the Butler Eagle Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

“I think everyone who was recruiting her liked that she could play inside and outside and stretch the floor,” said North Catholic coach Molly Rottman. “I can't be more excited for her. She's the prototypical player (Dayton) seems to like. I think she can make an impact there right away.”

Breen isn't resting on her accolades.

She spends most of her days at the Pine Community Center working on enhancing her skills.

She's also playing AAU basketball this summer.

“I'm working out, doing a lot of running and shooting,” Breen said. “My brother has been coming and we've been playing one-on-one.”
