Grandson called hero for helping grandfather trapped on hay elevator

CONCORD TWP — When 12-year-old Benjamin Geibel heard his grandfather in need Tuesday, his sprang into action. Richard Geibel, 65, was stuck near the top of a hay elevator attached to a barn at 145 Beach Road for more than a half-hour Tuesday afternoon before anyone heard his calls for help.

That person was Benjamin, who was able to get a neighbor who lived a few miles away to cut the chain of the elevator to set Geibel's leg free.

He was being cut free as emergency crews, including North Washington Volunteer Fire Company, arrived shortly after 2 p.m.

“He was face down in the hay, said Nick Grove, North Washington fire chief.

Geibel was airlifted to Allegheny General Hospital, where it was determined he had no broken bones but a compression injury, said his wife Beverly Geibel.

She said he was observed overnight and would likely be released today.

Beverly Geibel called her grandson a “hero” for the way he reacted.

“He's only 12 years old but he was a man here yesterday, that's for sure,” she said.
