Summer events aplenty at Moraine State Park

WORTH TWP — Moraine State Park is hosting a variety of activities this summer for those interested in the outdoors.

Here’s a roundup of activities available this season:

The park kicks off its July programs with Bats in Action from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. July 2, at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Route 528. Participants will see a bat condo and explore how the nighttime insectivores operate, why they might be in trouble and how people can help scientists by reporting bat activity.

On July 4, the park will host Fish for Free day. Anyone can legally fish without a license.

On July 9, the park will host a Muddy Creek Oil Field living history exhibit at the antique oil well. The Bessemer Gas Engine and Marshall-Barr No. 19 oil well equipment near 195 Park Road, Prospect, is restored and open for visitors. The well will operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and volunteers from the Moraine, McConnells Mills and Jennings Commission will be there to operate the engine and to answer visitors’ questions.

On July 30, a workshop on the venomous snakes is set from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Moraine Outdoor Center on the North Shore. Visitors can learn about Pennsylvania’s snakes and the role they play in the environment.

On July 31, Davis Hollow Marina on the North Shore will host Lunch on the Lake — a relaxing cruise on Lake Arthur. Registration and a $20 fee is required.

On Aug. 6 and 7, the park will be the site of the 2016 Regatta at Lake Arthur, which is in its 18th year. The event offers land and lake activities.

On Aug. 12, the park will host a Moraine camping and backpacking trip that will take participants on a backpacking, kayaking and biking adventure. Deadline to register is July 10.

On Aug. 17, Pleasant Valley Launch on the South Shore will be the kickoff point for a Full Moon Bat Paddle on Lake Arthur. Kayaks will be provided but a limited number are available and pre-registration is required.

On Aug. 27, visitors will have a chance to learn about the frogs and toads at the Moraine Outdoor Classroom on the North Shore. After a short discussion, participants will be led on a walk to find the amphibians.
