Shirtless man nabbed in Buffalo

BUFFALO TWP — A drunken, barefoot and shirtless burglar was caught trying to break into a house where a couple was sleeping Saturday morning, authorities said.

Buffalo Township police about 5:30 a.m. nabbed the would-be burglar, Ryan P. Stockman, 21, of Muddy Creek Township, as he tried to open a window in the back of the house in the 300 block of North Pike Road.

Stockman was arraigned later on several charges, including attempted burglary and trespass, both felonies, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $15,000 bail.

Dan Swift and his wife, Cheryl Swift, told police they were sleeping at their house when they heard banging on the rear deck and their dog barking and growling.

Investigators said that when Dan Swift got up and looked out the window, he saw an unknown man, with no shirt, trying to open the sliding glass door that leads to another bedroom.

The suspect also “knocked over flowers and furniture” on the porch, Dan Swift recounted, according to court documents.

Cheryl Swift peeked out the window to the rear porch and saw “a shape of a man attempting to open the sliding glass door,” a police affidavit said,

Police were notified, and Patrolman Daniel Ambrose, who was already in the area, got to the home in minutes to catch the suspect, later identified as Stockman, in the act.

He described seeing Stockman “with no shirt or shoes on” tying to force open a window on the rear deck, documents said.

Ambrose also noted the suspect reeked of alcohol and appeared impaired.

In addition to the felony charges, Stockman is charged with disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor, and public drunkenness, a summary.

This was not Stockman’s first brush with the law. State police in September arrested him and several people after they allegedly broke into the house of a friend’s former boyfriend.

He was subsequently sentenced Feb. 17 into Butler County’s Accelerated Disposition Program.
