Cranberry woman pleaded guilty to embezzling

PITTSBURGH — A Butler County resident pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to embezzling $150,000 from a subsidiary of UPMC and using the money for personal expenses including a baby sitter, home repairs and her daughter’s schooling.

Elizabeth A. Rotto, 46, of 604 Meadow Glen Court, Cranberry Township, entered her guilty plea before U.S. District Judge David Cercone.

She is to be sentenced Nov. 8 by Cercone.

The case involves Askesis, a subsidiary of UPMC, where Rotto was vice president of finance in 2015.

In June of that year UPMC contacted the FBI regarding Rotto, who in February had told ADG’s president at the time, Sharon Hicks, that she has misappropriated about $10,000 in company funds by filing false business expense reimbursement requests, according to information provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pittsburgh.

The office said a subsequent FBI investigation revealed that Rotto had embezzled about $150,000 using fraudulent expense reports, and had funnelled the money to a construction company that had done repair work on her home; a baby sitter for her daughter; a day care center for her daughter; and two private schools for her daughter.

The law provides for a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Stanton D. Levenson, Rotto’s attorney, said he plans to argue against prison time for Rotto, calling it “inappropriate” for a first-time offender in a financial crime.

“She’s accepted responsibility (and) assisted the company in determining the extent of the loss. She’s going to be making restitution,” Levenson said.

Pending sentencing, the court continued Rotto’s bond.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert S. Cessar is prosecuting this case for the government.
