Woman to plead guilty today to embezzling

CRANBERRY TWP — A Cranberry Township woman plans to plead guilty today to embezzling money from the health benefit program of a Pittsburgh-based software company.

Elizabeth A. Rotto, 46, has been charged with embezzlement related to health care, and is accused of embezzling more than $100 from Askesis Development Group, which is a subsidiary of UPMC, according to a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday.

The indictment was filed on June 10 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pittsburgh, as part of a nationwide “takedown” of suspects in a wide-ranging Medicare fraud investigation that federal authorities are calling the largest national Medicare fraud case in history.

According to the Department of Justice, the filings included 36 federal districts in 23 states, and resulted in 301 people — including 61 medical professionals — being charged in criminal or civil cases in federal courts.

The department said the sweep uncovered about $900 million in false Medicaid billings, a record-setting number.

Rotto’s attorney, Stanton D. Levenson, said she intends to plead guilty to the charge at a plea hearing in U.S. District Court at 2 p.m. today. According to court documents, Rotto faces a maximum of 10 years in jail and a fine of $250,000.
