Runners can sign up on race day for muddy 5K fun

Participants run through the Bantam Boot Camp area at the WWII Encampment during at the 2015 Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival's Muddy 5K race at Cooper's Lake Campground. This year the third annual Muddy 5K race will be hosted Sunday by the Butler Outdoor Club.

Thousands of muddy Jeeps will be joined by more than 100 muddy people during the third annual Bantam Jeep Muddy 5K race at 8 a.m. Sunday at Cooper's Lake Campground.

New this year, the race is managed by the Butler Outdoor Club and race proceeds benefit this nonprofit organization.

“The Butler Outdoor Club is excited to be part of this activity at the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival,” said Joyce Appel, organizer.

“We have been making plans to add new obstacles and even more mud so racers can be challenged and have a great time getting muddy. Our organization is excited to manage this event, and we appreciate the festival for the opportunity to get involved.”

Runners will encounter obstacles including tires, cargo nets and steep hills plus the Jeep Playground and mud pits that are used throughout the weekend by the participating Jeeps.

Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in all age classes, plus the top male and female finisher overall. The minimum age to participate is 12.

“We're hoping to have at least 50 more runners register on race day,” said Appel. “This is a fun race to do with friends and family, plus the race fee includes admission to the Jeep festival so it's a great way to spend a summer Sunday.”

On-site registration costs $50 and will be from 6:30 to 7:45 a.m. The race starts promptly at 8 a.m. Cash and credit accepted.
