Zelienople man accused of attacking, choking wife

ZELIENOPLE — A borough man was arrested Thursday for felony assault after police said he attacked his wife with a work boot and choked her until she apparently passed out at their home.

Richard A. Carmichael, 34, is in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail.

Zelienople police said Allison Carmichael told investigators that she was half asleep on the couch after returning home from work about 6 a.m. when she heard her husband getting ready for his work day.

Suddenly, she recounted, Carmichael clubbed her on the left side of her head with one of his work boots, according to court documents. He began yelling at her.

“Richard told her that he hated her and (that) he planned on ruining her life,” a police affidavit said.

Moments later, he allegedly grabbed her throat and choked her to the point that she was grasping for breath.

Allison Carmichael described “seeing stars” and she believed she may have briefly lost consciousness. She said before leaving for work, her husband punched her in the arm.

Police said while interviewing the victim, they noticed marks around her neck and what appeared to be an abrasion on the left side of her head.

Carmichael was arrested that night. District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned him on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and harassment.
