Suspect arraigned after police find drugs, money and guns in city house

Hasan Shareef, arrested today on drug trafficking charges after state police found a cache of heroin, cocaine, crack, money, guns and ammo at a Butler duplex, was dumbfounded when he learned his bail during arraignment tonight.

Three-quarters of a million dollars.

"Where am I going to get that kind of money?" he asked District Judge Sue Haggerty while being video arraigned at the Butler County Prison.

Haggerty recited the 40-year-old man's lengthy felony drug record in multiple states and the gravity of his current charges, for the high bail.

She advised him if he didn't like it, to take it up with another judge at his preliminary hearing June 6.

Police by chance arrested Shareef, originally from New York, at a home in the 1000 block of East Jefferson Street while serving a serving a search warrant for an unrelated burglary in Muddy Creek Township.

While in the home, troopers saw drugs and obtained a second warrant.

The secondary search turned up more than 400 stamp bags of suspected heroin, five bags of powder cocaine, seven bags of crack cocaine, 14 opened suboxone strips and prescription pills, according to charging documents.

Also found were digital scales, other drug paraphernalia, more than $8,500 in currency, two loaded pistols, a shotgun and ammunition scattered about the upstairs apartment.

Shareef was alone at the home when police arrived there.

Haggerty asked the defendant if he lived at the duplex.

"I'm just hanging out with a friend, Sara," he said. "I don't know her last name. I'm just sleeping there."

He claimed he was homeless but acknowledged his family lives in Yonkers, N.Y.

Haggerty arraigned Shareef on several felonies for drug possession and weapons possession.

Because of his criminal record riddled with felony convictions, he is barred under state law from having any firearms.
