Driver dies in city crash

Car runs into parked pickup

Butler police continue to investigate a Wednesday morning vehicle accident that killed a 29-year-old woman.

Kimberly M. Powers of Butler died after she crashed her car into a parked pickup truck shortly before 5 a.m. on Zeigler Avenue in Butler, authorities said. She was pronounced dead at Butler Memorial Hospital.

An autopsy did not indicate the cause of Powers’ death, and officials are awaiting results of further lab and toxicology tests.

Butler police suspect alcohol was a factor in wreck.

Investigators said Powers was traveling west in the 100 block of Zeigler Avenue when she lost control of her older model Pontiac Grand Am. The car’s front driver’s side slammed into a Dodge pickup parked on the east side of the road.

The crash near Short Street pushed the truck into another parked vehicle, which, in turn, was pushed into a third vehicle parked on the side of the road, said Capt. Tom Fair of the Butler Fire Department.

Powers was unresponsive when rescuers first arrived. Both of the car’s air bags deployed but it was not immediately known if she was wearing a seat belt.

She eventually regained consciousness and was able to identify herself.

“She was somewhat coherent,” said police Deputy Chief David Adam, “and seemed highly intoxicated.” Crews reported a “strong odor” of alcohol coming from her.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to Powers before she was taken to the hospital. Adam said hospital staff at 7:20 a.m. notified police to say that she had gone into cardiac arrest.

The Hile Funeral Home in Chicora is handling funeral arrangements.
