Woman in court for harassment

Adams resident Carmelina Vargo had a hearing Tuesday before District Judge Wayne Seibel in Evans City.
Judge gives guidelines for contact

EVANS CITY — A woman who police said has harassed “multiple” people since 2010 must abide by guidelines put forth by District Judge Wayne Seibel.

Carmelina Vargo, 49, of Adams Township was charged in April with stalking and two counts of harassment after an incident at the Mars Athletic Complex in which she allegedly targeted another Mars School District parent.

The complaint by Adams Township Police officer Mike Bailey said Vargo on April 13 followed victim Mike Wetherholt and his son in her vehicle through the complex's parking lot shouting “Vargos rule.”

“This is a continuing course of conduct with multiple prior incidents of harassing and stalking behavior by Carmelina Vargo against the Wetherholt family dating back to 2010,” the complaint reads.

The document also states that Vargo stared at Wetherholt in the complex parking lot while attempting to get his attention. When a friend of Wetherholt's approached him to talk, the friend noticed he was shaking.

Bailey said the friend intervened and blocked Vargo's car from following Wetherholt out of the parking lot, but Vargo followed both cars. The documents said Vargo was only thwarted when an ambulance got between the cars.

“This is an ongoing problem with Carmelina Vargo and prior reports to this department show a clear pattern of behavior demonstrated against the Wetherholt family for years,” Bailer said in his report.

On Tuesday, Vargo appeared before Seibel, who determined that she refrain from contact with the victim, witnesses or anyone who has called the police about her.

Seibel acknowledged that his ruling may be difficult because Vargo's children are in activities in the Mars district with other children and their parents.

“It's difficult, but the burden is on you and not anybody else,” Seibel said.

He said that includes negative looks and all communication.

Seibel also said Vargo must undergo a psychiatric evaluation and follow any recommendations made by the psychiatric professional.

Vargo must return to Seibel's courtroom in 120 days to ensure that all of his guidelines have been followed.

“If there are no problems, the case will be settled here,” Seibel said.

He said in similar cases in the past the charges have been reduced to a summary offense and accompanying fine and court costs paid by the defendant if they meet all stipulations.

Vargo's return court date has not been scheduled.

Neither Vargo nor her attorney Mike Pawk had any comment.
