Mars boys lacrosse in WPIAL finals

Blake Thompson scored six goals as the Mars boys lacrosse team rallied from a halftime deficit to topple Moon, 15-11, in the WPIAL Division II semifinals Monday night at North Allegheny's Newman Stadium.

The Planets (18-1) trailed 7-5 at the half, but took a 13-9 lead into the fourth quarter and hung on.

Zac Sicher and Anthony Grieco each added three goals and Joe Horvat had a goal and seven assists for Mars, which will play Hampton — a 17-9 winner over Quaker Valley — at 6 p.m. Friday in the Division II championship game at Highmark Stadium.

Baseball

Strong Vincent was able to get runners on base.

They just didn't stay there for long.

Grove City starting pitcher Justin Orlowski picked off three baserunners and reliever Brayden Martin also picked off a runner as the Eagles won 8-2 in the first round of the District 10 Class AAA baseball playoffs at Ainsworth Field in Erie.

Orlowski got the win, striking out two and walking three in 6 1/3 innings.

Kyle Shingledecker provided the offensive punch with a triple, single and three RBI. Logan Minch and Ben McKnight also drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles (7-13), who will take on rival Slippery Rock (15-5) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals at Jack Critchfield Park on the campus of Slippery Rock University.

Softball

Kiersten Rothen hit her first career home run to key a three-run sixth-inning for A-C Valley as the Falcons downed host Smethport 7-5 in a District 9 Class A quarterfinal playoff.

Kelsie Terwilliger had a two-run single in the sixth that gave A-C Valley (11-7) a 6-3 lead.

Katie Stumpner picked up the win in the circle for the Falcons, who will play No. 1 seed DuBois Central Catholic either Wednesday or Thursday in the semifinals.
