STEM Career Tour offered for Butler County students

15 spots open in weeklong tour

Fifteen Butler County students can take a STEM Careers Tour on June 13 to 17 for free.

It is free because of a $3,950 grant from the Tri-County Workforce Investment Board.

This tour of both businesses and colleges is being done in conjunction with Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School.

Grow a Generation, the company hosting the tour, has lined up these companies for the tour: Penn Energy, Neville Chemical, Quest Diagnostics, ALCOSAN, F.J. Baehr Architects, Discovery Robotics, NOVA Chemical, and Helomics.

Each day includes a lunch at various college departments. Students will have their meal while talking with graduate students and hearing about the specific degree offerings in that department.

Schools involved are: the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Carlow University’s Biology Department, Duquesne University’s Rangos School of Health Sciences, Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture and Chatham University’s School of Sustainability.

These visits are specific to the individual department in the school and focuses on the importance of developing mentor relationships and choosing a department with internship possibilities.

The week will conclude with an afternoon at the Tech Shop, the hub of innovation in the Pittsburgh Area. Students will get hands-on training with the equipment that carves metal with the pressure of a water jet.

Ninth through 12th graders in Butler County can sign up for this week tour. Information on this and other STEM Camps offered at Cardinal Wuerl can be found at www.growageneration.com/camps.
