SRU freezes rates for campus housing

Parking, other fees also will stay same

SLIPPERY ROCK — Housing fees and other rates for student services at Slippery Rock University won’t increase next year, the school announced Monday.

SRU will freeze on-campus housing rates for the 2016-17 school year as well as five other rates: parking, health services, recreation, and fees for the university’s student center and student life enhancement. The housing freeze will affect SRU’s eight residence halls, which house nearly 2,800 students.

SRU President Cheryl Norton said the decision was based on economic conditions and falling state subsidies to the state’s System of Higher Education.

“Putting a freeze on all university housing rates is part and parcel of our ongoing efforts to hold costs down while continuing to make the university not only an excellent educational choice, but an economical one as well,” Norton said.

Yearly tuition and fees for a full-time, in-state SRU student is $4,852, according to the university’s website.

For the 2015-16 academic year, students paid a $155 health service fee, a $210 student center fee, a $90 student life enhancement fee, and a $110 recreation fee, according to SRU’s website.

Housing fees at the university range from $1,744 per semester for a double room to $4,209 for a single studio apartment at one of SRU’s residence halls.

The announcement comes after last week’s report from Washington, D.C.-based Center for Budget and Policy Priorities showing that Pennsylvania’s public colleges and universities have lost state subsidies at nearly twice the national average. Norton said the freeze would help students and their families deal with rising tuition and fees at public universities and colleges.

“Given the economic environment, we believe (the freeze) is the right thing to do for everyone involved,” Norton said. “It is our hope that by holding the line on housing rates for our students and their families, we’re able to provide a bit of relief.”
