Taking a step toward the pros

Malovich, Osterrider improve amateur fight marks Saturday

Donovan Malovich and Bob Osterrider have visions of beginning professional boxing careers before long.

Both Butler Cubs fighters took another step toward that goal Saturday night.

Osterrider, a Gibsonia resident soon to turn 27, and Malovich, a 17-year-old junior at Butler High School, won their respective bouts by unanimous decision at the annual Butler Cubs Amateur Boxing Show.

Osterrider improved his amateur record to 21-6 with a win over Mike Rutkowski of Pittsburgh.

“I started off a little slow in the first round,” Osterrider admitted. “After that, I heard my corner yelling ‘body. body, body ...’ And I started going there.

“That set up a left hook to the head.”

That left hook resulted in a standing-eight count on Rutkowski and paved the way to victory.

“That was more like a fight than a boxing match,” Osterrider said. “But that’s OK ... People like to see boxing. They like to see a fight even more.

“By the end of this year, I’m hoping to turn pro. My parents have been supporting me in that regard. I can’t thank them enough for that. Even though I’m an amateur, I’ve been able to focus 100 percent on boxing.”

Osterrider has been boxing for seven years. He would be a welterweight as a pro.

“We’ll see where he’s at by the end of the year,” Butler Cubs boxing manager Don Spinetti said. “I want to get him a few more good fights.”

Malovich (28-4) was supposed to fight Adam Littlejohn of Punxsutawney Saturday night, but Littlejohn weighed in at 165 pounds — 15 pounds heavier than Malovich. Spinetti will not allow a weight differential of more than five pounds in an amateur bout.

Instead, Malovich faced Mike Conway of Washington, Pa., who has a 20-10 record and a plan of turning pro. He has two older brothers who are pro fighters.

Malovich had not boxed since last year’s Butler Cubs show.

“I was nervous about my stamina and I was tired toward the end of the third round,” Malovich admitted. “But I got it done.”

Malovich forced a standing-eight count on Conway in the third round and won all three rounds. He turns 18 next March.

“Once I turn 18, I want to go pro,” he said. “It’s a matter of beating more open division fighters. I hope to get at least three more matches in between now and March.”

A third Cubs boxer with hopes of turning pro down the road — Billy Wolfe III — was scheduled to be on the card. His opponent pulled out and a replacement could not be found.

Brad Regis, 25, of the Butler Cubs scored a decision in his bout over Adam Millspaw of Erie. Regis is 13-6 as an amateur.

“Boxing is just something I’ve always wanted to do,” Regis said. “I played some basketball in high school at Butler and for my church team. When that was over, it was like, what’s next?

“I switched over to boxing and I love it.”

Two Cubs fighters lost matches Saturday night. Lucas Adams dropped a split decision to Scott Perhach of Washington, Pa., and Spencer Snedden saw his amateur debut spoiled by a second round TKO loss to Ethan McGrady of the Lions Den in East Brady.

Rich Cramer, 53, a former Butler Cubs boxer, opened the Lions Den last year and is working with six fighters there.

“I used to work with Steve Six and the Specialty Outreach program here, coaching and training,” said Cramer, who went on to become Pennsylvania’s light-heavyweight kick-boxing champion in 1998. “I fought for the Cubs when I was 12.

“I opened my boxing gym in East Brady to give youths some structure in their lives. There is too much suicide and drug use in Chicora, East Brady, the Butler area ... I want to do my part in fighting against that.”

Spinetti said Chris Bauer — another former Cubs boxer — opened a boxing facility in Kittanning 10 years ago.

“It’s nice to see the impact our program has had that way,” Spinetti said. “This boxing program has helped turn a lot of kids around through the years.”
