Gold rush

Seneca Valley's Mike Kolor runs to victory in the 800 meters during the WPIAL individual track championship meet Thursday at Baldwin High School. Kolor won the 1,600 meter race as well.
Kolor, Geist Hochbein claim multiple titles

WHITEHALL — Mike Kolor was emotional before the WPIAL Class AAA Track and Field Championships.

He was emotional after as well.

Kolor, who finished up his last day at Seneca Valley High School Thursday, also finished up his day with a pair of WPIAL Class AAA Track and Field Championship wins at Baldwin High School.

It was a relief to Kolor, a Seneca Valley senior who had five silver medals coming into his last WPIAL meet.

But no golds.

Now he has two.

Kolor won the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 54.12 seconds and the 1,600 with a time of 4:13.23.

“It really means so much,” Kolor said. “I've been really nervous all day and really emotional. I kept telling myself — it sounds kind of cheesy, 'Pressure is privilege.' I just kept telling myself that all day.”

Kolor won the 1,600 easily, besting runner-up Eric Kennedy of Kiski Area by nearly four seconds.

The 800 race was a bit closer with Kolor edging Isaiah Bailey of Penn Hills by .60 seconds.

“The first one was a relief,” Kolor said. “I was just so emotional.”

Kolor was one of two Butler County boys athletes to win multiple WPIAL titles.

Perhaps not shockingly, Knoch junior thrower Jordan Geist was the other.

Geist threw 72 feet, 7 inches to win the shot put and uncorked a throw of 192-11 in the discus to easily best the field in both events.

Geist's prowess in the shot put is well-known — he won the title in the event at the prestigious Penn Relays earlier this season — but he's beginning to get a similar reputation in the discus.

“I think I could possibly touch 200 and the state record (at the PIAA Track and Field Championships over Memorial Day weekend),” Geist said. “It's really awesome. I never expected to be throwing 190s this year in the discus, especially with the way I started the season. But now that I am doing it, I'm just trying to have as many throws over 190 as I can.”

Geist drew a lot of attention Thursday. He figures to get more of the same in Shippensburg at the state meet next weekend.

But Geist more than welcomes the scrutiny and pressure.

After the state meet, he will throw at the national high school meet in June in pursuit of a national championship.

“I love the target on my back,” Geist said. “It pushed me to train harder, not just in the state, but in the nation.”

Freeport hurdler Dylan Hochbein won a WPIAL Class AA title in the 300 hurdles, but something was missing: his twin brother, Brandon, who was disqualified in the event at the qualifier last week.

“Motivationally, that made me dig deep down for him,” Dylan Hochbein said. “Warming up was so hard because he wasn't there warming up with me. It's terrible because ever since we were junior high kids, this is what we've been dreaming about. It really got to me.”

Dylan Hochbein said he was thinking about his brother for most of the race, especially in the final meters as he realized Brandon wasn't running beside him.

“It's not a minor thing. It's huge. That was his race,” Dylan said. “It affected us more than anyone can imagine.

“I'm at a point where I'm trying to win it for him,” Dylan added. “It was bittersweet for me.”

Brandon Hochbein, though, did get to wear a gold medal as a member of Freeport's 1,600-meter championship.

He teamed with Dylan Hochbein, Kevin Lynch and Robert Reichenbaugh to finish first with a time of 3:25.14.Freeport senior Bobby Jendrejewski also took home a gold in the discus with a career-best throw of 149 feet.“I let it go, and I was watching it,” Jendrejewski said, smiling. “It stayed in the air a lot longer than it usually does, and I was saying to myself, 'Nuh-uh, nuh-uh,' and then it landed and my mouth was wide open.”It was Jendrejewski's last throw of the day. He bested Joe Ford of Riverview by nearly eight feet.Jendrejewski also qualified for the state meet in the shot put.“It means a lot, especially since I didn't medal in either event last year,” Jendrejewski said. “It's a good way to wrap up my senior year. I'm just glad I got a chance to make our school proud.”
