Butler Police4:08 p.m. Wednesday — A homeowner caught a suspected burglar red-handed at her home in the 200 block of East Patterson Avenue. Brad S. Cookson Jr., 42, of Butler was taking items from a garage and placing them in his vehicle when the victim confronted him, police said.Apparently surprised, he returned the unspecified property and drove away, according to court documents. The resident described the suspect’s vehicle as a red SUV with a sticker on the window and a car seat in back.Police said they recently had a dealing with Cookson and they knew his vehicle fit the description of the one in the alleged burglary.The next day, the victim identified Cookson from a police photo lineup, documents said. Police obtained an arrest warrant for him. He is charged with burglary.Tuesday — Rachel M. Roman, 36, of Butler was charged with driving under the influence of drugs after police found her about 10:50 a.m. May 2 passed out in a vehicle on South Main Street.Police said Roman, who was holding her keys, acknowledged that she had taken her prescription methadone earlier that morning. She appeared impaired and subsequently was arrested after failing field sobriety tests.The suspect was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test. Toxicology results showed she had several drugs in her system, court documents said. Those drugs included anti-anxiety medication, marijuana, methadone and a metabolite of cocaine.1:35 a.m. Sunday — Donna L. Mehelich, 23, of Butler was found with suspected marijuana following a traffic stop on West New Castle Street. Police said they spotted her vehicle while investigating complaints of alleged drug activity in the 200 block of North Sixth Avenue.Mehelich appeared nervous and continued to fidget with her purse that was on the floor of her seat, according to court documents. When asked, she denied there was anything illegal in the car. She even let police search it.Between the front passenger seat and center console, officers found a crack pipe. In Mehelich’s purse, police turned up what they believe was marijuana wrapped in cellophane.Police subsequently charged her with possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Butler County SheriffTuesday — Two Butler County men were charged with providing false information on background check forms earlier this month while attempting to obtain permits to carry a handgun.David A. Wagner, 45, of Clearfield Township and Ryan A. Miano, 24, of Clay Township on May 9 and May 4, respectively, allegedly provided answers about their criminal record on the concealed carry application that were not truthful and were rejected by the Pennsylvania Instant Check System that is run by the state police.Both men are charged with unsworn falsification to authorities.

State Police, Franklin5:55 a.m. Thursday — A sport utility vehicle driven by Amanda D. Buchanan, 34, of Harrisville struck a deer on Interstate 80 just west of Stone Church Road in Scrubgrass Township. Buchanan and her passengers, including a 4-year-old girl, were not injured, but the SUV sustained heavy front-end damage and had to be towed.

State Police, KittanningSunday — A car driven by Joseph Bonetto, 39, of East Brady rear-ended another car on Route 68 in Bradys Bend Township. The other driver, 69-year-old Joann Uplinger, was stopped and waiting to turn into her driveway when her car was hit. Her turn signal was on.Police said their investigation continues.

State Police, Mercer10:15 p.m. Wednesday — A 91-year-old Washington County man was hurt when the sport utility vehicle he was driving struck a deer on Interstate 79 in Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County. The SUV, which was traveling about 70 mph, continued for another 100 yards after hitting the deer.The driver, Donald Coligan of Canonsburg, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries. His passenger, a 71-year-old Canonsburg woman, was not injured. She, too, was wearing a seat belt.
