Marcoux, Seles key girls romp

Planets pound Hempfield, 21-6

ADAMS TWP — Mars all-time leading scorer Shannon Doyle was out with an undisclosed injury.

No problem. The Planets’ girls lacrosse team has plenty of offensive punch.

Lilli Marcoux scored six goals and also had three assists as Mars rolled to a 21-6 win over Hempfield Wednesday night in the WPIAL Division II playoffs at the Mars Athletic Complex.

Paige Seles added five goals, Kelly O’ Connell four and Eden Fletcher three for the balanced Planets (14-3), who have now scored 20 or more goals in five games this season.

“That’s something we really focused on the last three years building this program,” said Mars coach Lindsay Flavion. “We really try to spread things out. We’re able to count on other teammates and sub without reservation. I love being able to see players on this team have each other’s back.”

Doyle has more than 200 career goals for the Planets and is expected to be back in the lineup in the semifinals against either Shaler or Bethel Park on a day and at a site and time to be determined.

Those two schools square off today in a quarterfinal game.

For Marcoux, who had three goals less than six minutes into the game, this lacrosse season has been a release.

Marcoux missed the entire soccer season with a stress fracture in her knee.

“I’m so excited,” Marcoux said. “I missed out on our WPIAL championship for soccer this year because I was injured, so I’m really ready to get that medal. I was cleared in the winter and was ready for indoor lacrosse season. It was sad (I missed out on soccer), but it is what it is. I was ready for lacrosse season.”

Hempfield (8-3) came out ready.

Sam Orie scored two goals for the Spartans in the first 44 seconds to give Hempfield a 2-0 lead.

Mars, however, rolled off the next nine goals to seize control.

“I’m always a little nervous,” Flavion said. “We like to keep the energy high on this team. We keep that mentality the whole time. We try to play the same for 50 minutes.”

Mars excelled by controlling possession and winning draws, especially in the second half when the Planets held Hempfield scoreless.

“Stick skills, stick skills. I drill that into them,” Flavion said. “Fundamentals. Lacrosse is finesse sport and it’s really fun to watch when you can see that kind of play.”
