Planets bounced by 4-1 loss

WEXFORD — Casey Farkasovsky is not short on talent or experience.

She used both to eliminate Mars from the WPIAL Class AAA softball playoffs.

Beaver’s senior pitcher scattered seven hits while striking out seven and walking only one in a 4-1 win over the Planets in a first-round game Wednesday at North Allegheny High School.

“Her arm and leg had been bothering her the last week or so,” said Beaver coach Butch Rousseau. “To show up today the way she did, it shows she is getting better.”

The Planets scored their lone run in the top of the fifth inning when Izzy Berkopec and Blake Kitt drilled consecutive two-out doubles. Berkopec scored to cut Beaver’s lead to 2-1, but Farkasovsky would allow just one baserunner the rest of the game.

Farkasovsky is a four-year starter for the Bobcats, helping her team qualify for postseason play every year. She was a major contributor to the Bobcats’ WPIAL title in 2014 when the team competed in Class AA.

“She picks it up in the playoffs,” Rousseau said of Farkasovsky. “She thrives on this.”

Mars had a golden opportunity to break the ice in the first frame. After two outs, Kitt doubled, Lindy Lee walked and Niki Schlegel reached on an infield single to load the bases. But Farkasovsky got Jordyn Douglas to ground out to keep the Planets off the scoreboard.

Mars (9-8) entered the playoffs having lost three of its previous four games.

“We had been struggling to score runs and spent the last week and a half getting back to basics,” said Planet coach Michele Goodworth. “We were very prepared for today.”

Beaver (11-5) scored two runs off of Schlegel in the bottom of the fourth to break the stalemate. Paige Ziggas singled in Ashley Kondracki with one out. The former then came home on a base hit from Tayven Rousseau, Beaver’s leadoff hitter.

Tayven Rousseau, along with No. 2 and 3 hitters Jenn Kondracki and Haley Champ, combined for six of Beaver’s 10 hits.

After Farkasovsky preserved the Bobcat lead in the top of the fifth, Beaver added an unearned run in the bottom of the frame. Another insurance run came in the sixth when Stacey Christ doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Rousseau’s sacrifice fly.

Schlegel pitched all six innings for the Planets, striking out one and walking one. It was the senior’s final game for the Planets, after starting in the circle for three seasons.

“She made a difference for Mars softball,” said Goodworth. “She’s a leader and a role model.

“The girls did everything we asked them to do. Sometimes, it just doesn’t come together.”
