Butler’s boys volleyball team needed a boost.

It received a huge one Thursday night.

Senior Matt Wetzel totaled 39 assists and Nash Bryan 19 kills as the Golden Tornado cut down visiting Seneca Valley 3-1.

The Golden Tornado (11-7, 7-5) had already clinched a WPIAL Class AAA playoff spot out of Section 2. The team snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday with a sweep of North Hills.

But Thursday’s win over a playoff-bound Seneca Valley team may be just what the doctor ordered as the postseason begins next week.

“This win brought us out of the doldrums,” said Butler coach Lew Liparulo. “The players were very unselfish tonight. Our goal was to avoid the errors, the service errors, and we did that. It was a nice win for the kids.”

The Tornado lost the first game 25-19, but answered with three straight 25-23 wins.
