Fundraising page set up for LeMans project

The organizer of the project to restore the 1971 Pontiac LeMans of former Butler sports star Eddie Hartman has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the effort.

Dave Fox, who is a Butler High School graduate who bought the vehicle from Hartman for $500, on Tuesday set up the page, “Eddie Hartman Le Mans Project.” Fox said he set up the page in response to people who contacted him asking for an easier way to donate to the project.

Fox has raised about $3,400 for restoring Hartman’s 1971 LeMans, which needs to have its engine and transmission rebuilt, as well as minor body work and other maintenance. Fox said the project needs about $7,000 more to complete the restoration.

The plan for the vehicle, once it is restored, is to make it a “traveling tribute” to Hartmans’ life and to use it as a forum to speak out against drunken driving, Fox said.

Hartman was a multisport athlete at Butler who went on to receive All-American honors in football at Geneva College.

He was 22 years old when he was killed May 27, 1983, the night before he was to marry his high school sweetheart. The vehicle he was in was hit head-on by a drunken driver.

Donations to the project can be made online or by sending a check to Dave Fox, 4125 Miller St., Butler PA 16001.
